Connect Health, the UK’s largest and most experienced independent community healthcare provider, has signed up to a carbon offsetting initiative – as part of its drive to improve sustainability and make an impact on climate change.
Connect Health has partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain to offset the unavoidable carbon emissions (waste and energy) from its head office in Newcastle, via their Woodland Fund.
The Woodland Fund supports wind, solar, hydro and cook stove projects that replace fossil fuel energy sources and provide lasting social and economic benefits in developing countries around the world.
In addition to this, the fund also supports reforestation and woodland projects with a strong focus on having a positive impact on local wildlife, ecology and biodiversity, with projects in the UK, South America and Australia. By planting trees, more CO₂ is absorbed as they grow.
Carbon offsetting is the process of compensating for greenhouse gas emissions produced by an individual, organisation, or activity by funding or engaging in activities that remove or reduce an equivalent amount of emissions from the atmosphere.
The goal is to balance out the environmental impact of activities that produce carbon dioxide (CO₂) or other greenhouse gases, achieving net-zero impact on the environment.
Sue Lannen, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for Connect Health, said: “We are committed to being a sustainable business, and to be net zero by 2035. Carbon offsetting allows us to take responsibility for our emissions by supporting renewable energy and reforestation projects, helping to create a sustainable future.
“While offsetting is a useful tool for mitigating climate impact, we will continue to focus on directly reducing rather than compensating for them, and we will do this by continuing to implement sustainable business practices.”
